Gifts From Over The Seas

Day 31

A lovely friend of mine volunteers with a charity called Mercy in Action who work out in the Philippines and she is flying out to volunteer this week. It really doesn't seem enough but I have given her a few little items to take to the children she meets out there.

Mercy in Action is an amazing charity that work with street children and poor families in the Philippines. Their work is invaluable. There are an incredible amount of children on the streets in the Philippines. Some families just cannot afford to look after their children, other children have to work for the family and others leave home. Mercy in Action has already helped many families reunite and a big part of this was financially assisting them to build a small family home. I could not believe that a small and basic home out there was in the region of £800 and this will keep a family together. They have also assisted people to gain an income that was sustainable.

I found it shocking to hear that children who are left to roam the streets by 10 or 11 most will be taking drugs, stealing and tend to become victims of sexual exploitation. For those children still on the streets, Mercy in Action provide food, education and nurture in the daytime. The centre they run allows children to wash, get hot food and be educated. They also provide a street outreach service to get to those 'hard to reach'.
